I spent two years in Montreal while in grad school, and you have made me homesick for that beautiful city. Yes, indeed, the food there is quite excellent -- I'm so pleased you got to experience it, plus all that lovely snow!

I agree with you about the snow. We're just getting our fair share in Toronto after two months of unusually mild weather. Winter just isn't winter without snow.

I'm so glad that you had a wonderful time in Montreal. It's a gem! Not sure if you're into the magazine Gourmet, but if you are, the March issue is all about Montreal.

Oh, Julie, this is so lovely. Lovely, lovely, lovely. I nearly burst into tears at the mention of Eaton's Sugarhouse and the Lebanon co-op. (I want to move into that co-op, actually. A cot and a laptop, that's all I need!)

I'm sure that I can't do justice to Au Kouign Amann's version, but...I do have a recipe for kouignamann, if you're interested in a baking weekend sometime...

Especially if it's one of those times that the folks are on vacation, and we have the house to ourselves. House party in Vermont! Did I mention that Eaton's Sugarhouse is a mere 15 minutes from our VT home-away-from-home?

This made me homesick for Montreal, too. I went there for a summer when I was in my 20's, and didn't come home for 7 months. I'll be stopping by that chocolatier the next time I go for a visit!

Let's face it: The French and their extended culinary civilization have got it going on. What you noted about Montreal and the quality of even the humblest eating places there was also true of New Orleans -- as I know you know.

Bro, you're right, of course. Except that Montreal's cuisine is actually much closer to a French experience than N.O., where the food is heavier, more Southern-influenced and much more highly spiced, of course. Naturally, there's a link, at least to Canada if not to Montreal, since the exiled Acadians eventually became Louisiana's Cajuns...
