For years my sister and her husband fled from family on the holiday, eating Chinese takeout or hamburgers instead of enduring a get-together that would only remind them of their grief.

I like the post with such a nice material which is much informative. Thanks.

Julie, I am so sorry to hear this. I actually thought about you a bit this past weekend as I was making stock from my turkey frame - you inspired me to do so, always - and this soup sounds lovely for my resulting stock. I send my deepest condolences... I lost my own father 8 years ago on Halloween. It doesn't get easier; it just becomes less hard, if that's any consolation.

Noooo, don't torture me!! We are having a very anaemic summer at the moment so you're not missing much... Have a ball in Greece!

And I'm glad you enjoyed the skewers - but I'm afraid your combat trousers were about the only manly thing I could detect about you, so you're safe on that count!! ;-)

I lost my own father in 2003 and still miss him terribly. He was a huge fan of your parents' store in White Plains, Ellie Conason, and would always go there to purchase gifts for my mother. My family will never forget the wonder and joy of watching my mother unwrap a gift (often of handmade jewelry) from Ellie Conason; the pieces were always so artistically made. Needless to say, we were all devastated when Ellie Conason closed its doors; my sister and I have since searched high and low to locate handmade jewelry equal in design and quality, with very little luck.

So here's to your mother and father, their spectacular taste, and two families who were indelibly touched by them.

Great story. Good food can do the trick!...

Even when the death of a beloved parent is expected, it comes hard. Or so it has come to us, in any case. My father was diagnosed with a terminal prognosis more than seven months ago.

I miss Uncle Red so much already! I understand exactly what you mean about an expected death still being unexpected.
